"Água das Pedras" – A centuries-old brand

The "Água das Pedras" brand forms part of the portfolio of Super Bock Group, the largest Portuguese refreshments.

Água das Pedras is an icon and a symbol of carbonated water – with 100% natural gas – in Portugal. "Água das Pedras” – Pedras Salgadas – is the term used when asking for "sparkling water”, demonstrating the tradition and reputation that the brand retains in the domestic beverage market.

A highly rated name in Portugal and with a unique composition, "Água das Pedras” belongs to a very select group, as only 0.5% of the waters in the world share this trait – carbonated natural mineral water.

Trendy and cosmopolitan, "Água das Pedras” is always present in moments of conviviality to provide unique ambiences and experiences for consumers, the attributes of the brand clearly being associated with the realm of the senses and the pleasure of drinking a "living water”. It is at the same time natural and fresh.

The water is collected in Pedras Salgadas Park – from which it takes its name – one of the most iconic thermal Parks in Portugal and located in the municipality of Vila Pouca de Aguiar, in the northern region of Portugal.

According to some authors, after excavations made at a ruined fortified settlement where archaeological relics were found, Água das Pedras was known of during Roman times.

Numerous awards in international contests greatly contributed to increasing the recognition of Pedras Salgadas over time. The first was at the Universal Exposition of Vienna, Austria, in 1873. Since that occasion, it has received over two dozen awards in prestigious national and international competitions.

Currently, "Água das Pedras” can be found on five continents, in more than 25 countries such as Spain, France, UK, Switzerland, Angola, Canada and, most recently, in India. Thanks to its trendy nature, the brand is also preparing to enter cosmopolitan cities such as London, New York, Sao Paulo and Berlin.

  • "Água das Pedras" started out in Pedras Salgadas, where royalty used to take their holidays.
  • In the early days, bottles were transported in Rabelo boats (traditional Portuguese cargo boats), alongside the cases of Port Wine.
  • The reputation of Pedras Salgadas became official in 1871 when José Júlio Rodrigues, the royal physician, analyzed the water of one of its springs.
  • It received its first medal at the international exposition in Vienna in 1873.
  • In 1893, industrial bottling and distribution of the water began under the name Pedras Salgadas, allowing the water to come within reach of the entire national population.
  • In the 1960s, the brand became confused with the product – água com gás (sparkling water) – due to its notoriety.
  • In the 1990s, it was the subject of several image changes and innovative and dynamic advertising campaigns.
  • In 2005, the company invested in diversifying its products with the launch of Pedras Levíssima.
  • Time magazine featured "Água das Pedras" in its June 2007 edition. It dedicated a page to the fashion for waters and Michael Mascha, where the American taster stated his preferences, and in the segment of carbonated waters, he choose "Água das Pedras": praising its unique composition, as well as the fact that its bubbles and flavour have a natural origin.
  • In 2011, it celebrated 140 years and invested in entering some of the world’s major metropolises.
  • In 2012, it invested in entry into the Brazilian and US markets in a coherent and consistent manner, and launched, for the first time, a campaign with a public figure: Daniela Ruah was chosen.
