The Region

A region of high mountains and deep valleys, Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro are located in the north of Portugal.

It is one of the country’s productive areas. Port Wine, olive oil and honey are its most renowned products. Almonds, apples, cherries, chestnuts, potatoes, cereals and mushroomsare also produced in this rich region. You may also taste the typical sausages, ham, maronesa, mirandesa and barrosã steaks, cakes, savoury puddings and various convent sweets, which will be impossible to resist.

If you choose to devote yourself to nature, you will find rabbits, hares, wild boar, foxes, thrushes, partridges, pigeons e doves. You will also have the opportunity to observe rare birds flying over the cliffs of the Douro, take part in adventure and extreme sports and enjoy the protected areas of the region that nature offers - Azibo Lagoon, Peneda-Gerês National Park, and the Alvão, Douro International and Montesinho Natural Parks.
